Dallas Wine “Chick” on the wines of Duchman Family Winery

We had the pleasure of chatting with one of the Dallas and Fort Worth area’s most popular wine bloggers, Melanie Ofenloch, during the first ever Hill Country Wineries Road Show. Here are her thoughts of two of the wines from Duchman Family Winery:

  • Duchman Family Winery, 09 Montepulciano, ($15) this was a red wine full of stone fruit, slight oak and a bit of spice at the finish.  It was a Texas wine that is actually possible to drink in August Texas weather.
  • Duchman Family 09 Vermentino ($10), a Texas patio wine that is floral with hints of pear, but balanced with some minerality.  Lively and light for patio weather.

Coincidentally, a group of Texas sommeliers blind tasted more than 100 Texas wines and both Duchman wines were on the winners list.

My takeaways from this event – I found wines that I liked that give me hope for the future of Texas wines.  I would keep an eye on Duchman Family.  I expect good things.

We would like to extend our thanks to Melanie for her kind words and support of Texas Wines. Check out her excellent blog here. To view her overview of the roadshow in its entirety click here.

The wine confirms the nose with more flavors of peach, apricot and orange balanced with a floral note on the finish. Winemaker Notes: The 2009 Duchman Family Winery Montepulciano is a medium bodied dry red wine with notes of black fruit, purple flowers and light spice on the nose. Cherry and black plums compliment the subtle earth character found in this wine.  The slight foundation of oak (10% new) lengthens the mid palate and provides depth of flavor to the fruit. Enjoy this wine with rich pastas courses and light game such as quail or lamb.

Winemaker Dave Reilly: “When you support Texas wine, you support Texas agriculture.”

Above, from left: Winemaker Mark Penna, owner Stan Duchman, and winemaker Dave Reilly, who was featured in a recent profile of the winery in Country World magazine.

“The grapes are doing well this year, both in Driftwood and on the South Plains,” wrote central Texas journalist Clay Coppedge in the latest edition of Country World Magazine, “and the [Duchman Family] winery has drawn notice in the marketplace through its strong showing at the San Francisco International Wine Festival. Duchman’s 2008 Texas Dolcetto wine was awarded a double gold medal and two other wines received silver medals.”

For winemaker Dave Reilly, wrote Coppedge, “the awards are not only a validation of the Duchman Family Winery wines, but of Texas wines in general. ‘People in Texas have every reason to support their Texas wines’ [said Reilly]. ‘Wine labels are tricky enough anyway, but some say things like For Sale in Texas Only and people think it’s a Texas wine when it’s not. When you support Texas wine, you support Texas agriculture. That’s a big part of what we want to do here.’”

The Duchman Family Winery is a proud member of the central Texas farming community.
